Peter Ahabwe Babigumira

Peter Ahabwe Babigumira lives and works in Uganda as a Technical Advisor at the Uganda Ministry of Health Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) and a pharmacist at the Infectious Diseases Institute at the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University. He received a Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2013 from Mbarara University of Science and Technology and is going to start a Master’s in security studies. 

Peter is an expert in the fields of health diplomacy and health system strengthening and has public health technical expertise. At the Uganda Ministry of Health, Peter coordinated the surge team and COVID-19 situation room. Before the spread of COVID-19 in 2020, he was focused on emergency preparedness and secured Uganda’s participation in 2018 for a WHO pilot program supporting pandemic response plans. His work through this pilot program was utilized during Uganda’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peter serves as the 2021/2022 secretariat for Uganda’s co-chair with the Africa CDC of the Global Health Security Agenda Action package on Bio-safety and Bio-security, and previously worked on the Uganda Action package on Antimicrobial Resistance during the 2019/2020 term. 

His work and research as an epidemic intelligence analyst included development and implementation of a public health emergency management training curriculum for district health leadership. Peter recently became involved with the Monkeypox response, and believes this disease will be a priority of his work during the next few months.
