Human coronaviruses are a type of virus and are common throughout the world. Scientists know of seven different coronaviruses that can infect people and make them sick. Common human coronaviruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses similar to the common cold. Most people get infected with these viruses at some point in their lives and these illnesses usually only last for a short amount of time.

However, two of these known human coronaviruses, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV have been known to cause severe symptoms including death.

In December 2019, a novel coronavirus was identified as the cause of an outbreak of a respiratory illness (COVID-19) in Wuhan, China. As of March 30, 2020, the virus has spread to 202 countries and territories in six different regions of the world. There are now more than 693,200 confirmed cases (based on WHO case definitions for COVID-19) and over 33,100 deaths as a result of the outbreak.

COVID-19 Frontline Guide for Local Decision-Makers

The COVID-19 pandemic is causing significant disruptions to cities and local communities in the US and around the world. Successful suppression of COVID-19 in the United States will require urgent and decisive action by state, local and community leaders across the country. In collaboration with colleagues at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the Center for Global Development, and Talus Analytics, we are launching the COVID-19 Frontline Guide. This resource is intended to provide leaders and public officials with a web-based decision support tool and progress indicators to assist in informed decision-making on how to combat COVID-19 in their jurisdictions. This guide provides a framework to help local leaders establish strategies to fight the outbreak, both by reducing transmission of the disease and by supporting their communities effectively.

COVID-19 in Africa

As news of the emergence of a novel coronavirus spread from China in late December, 2019, commentators were quick to point out Africa’s potential vulnerability; a substantial number of African countries’ health systems score poorly on measures of epidemic preparedness and response, and trade links between Africa and China have grown dramatically in the past two decades. Trepidation remains over how countries in Africa will respond to an epidemic that has already overwhelmed health systems in Iran, Italy, Spain, and beyond. However, instead of being perceived as a source of disease, as African nations have been accused of being for millennia, African nations now see the threat as coming from abroad. For more information, please read: COVID-19 in Africa: Imported threats.
